On February 3, 1857, The Daily Bee published its first issue of its newspaper. The first editor of the newspaper was John Rollin Ridge until he retired from the position a week later and James McClatchy became editor. The Bee was originally located on Third Street between J and K Streets. The name “The Daily Bee” appeared in the masthead of the paper until 1890 when it was changed to “The Evening Bee.” The name “The Sacramento Bee” finally appeared at the top of the newspaper on March 6, 1908. On April 28, 1849, Sacramento’s first newspaper, the Placer Times, published its first edition in a small adobe building near the corner of 28th and K Streets, just east of Sutter’s Fort. The newspaper was printed on the former press used to print the Californian newspaper in Monterey in 1846, the first newspaper in California. Kemble stepped down as editor of the Placer Times in

May 20th is World Bee Day! This day reminds us of the value of bees, especially as pollinators. Considering Sacramento’s longest running newspaper is The Sacramento Bee, we couldn’t pass this day up. For today, Jared discussed the mosaic from the entrance of a previous Sacramento Bee building and letterpress printed an image of a busy bee from an electrotype, made about 130 years ago, from the Lewis Winter Collection. #WorldBeeDay #bee #bees #newspaper #sacramentobee #sacramento #sachistorymuseu

For Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Jared discusses Sacramento’s first non-English newspaper. First published in December 1856, Sacramento’s first Chinese newspaper was published by Ze Too Yune at I and 3rd Streets in Sacramento’s former Chinatown. The name of the newspaper was printed in Cloister Black font, which is the closest font, typographically, to the type used for the masthead. #SacHistoryMuseum #aapiheritagemonth #aapi #aapimonth #chinesehistory #typography #museumtok #

On August 15, 1846, Robert Semple and Walter Colton resurrected an old wooden common press in Monterey and published the first edition of the “Californian” newspaper. This was the first newspaper published in California. The printing press they used was originally brought to California in the mid 1830s by Agustín V. Zamorano to publish books and government documents as Monterey was the capital of Alta California. The “Californian” newspaper was published weekly until November 1848, when its enti
