St. Mary’s Parish is giving a solemn concentration towards developing liturgically trained Alter Servers and they are selected from the Sunday school of the children those who have received the Holy Communion Sacrament.

Alter Servers are trained to serve at the altar by helping the priest celebrate Mass. Young people can become altar servers anytime after the third grade. We usually hold our training in the Spring. Altar servers carry the cross, help the priest prepare the gifts for Eucharist and ring the bells.

Any youth of the Parish or a student of Saint Mary’s School who is in the fifth grade or above can become an altar server. If you are interested, please call the rectory at 845-896-6400. Training will be provided by the priests of the parish.

Interested in becoming an Altar Server? Altar servers carry the cross and candles, hold the book for the priest, carry the incense and censer, present the bread, wine and water to the priest, wash the hands of the priest, and assist him as necessary. This ministry is open to both boys and girls in the fourth grade or older.

Altar servers help everyone pray and worship God, but especially assist the priest in the celebration of the sacred mysteries. Everything in the liturgy is directed to manifesting the glory of God. Servers should be mature enough to understand their responsibilities and to carry them out well in a graceful and reverent way.
