Cycling along the Romantic Road is made easy by the fact that there are a number of connected cycle paths away from the busy main roads and that there is a recognised long-distance trail (the D9) covering the route in its entirety.

Würzburg is often where a visitor decides to start their tour of the Romantic Road route through southern Germany - and it is a fine introduction to the trip. The city itself is set in a beautiful hilly location on a river and possesses a wealth of history, as well playing host to a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Residence palace.

Dinkelsbühl is a fabulous town to stop off along the way on a journey down the Romantic Road. It is one of Germany's most "romantic" medieval towns and many of the hotels can trace their origins back to the days of the Middle Ages - as inns or merchants' houses or as storehouses.

The long-distance walking trail along the route of the Romantic Road covers just over 450km in 24 days and is split up into 13 stages. Of course, most walkers will be looking at doing part of the trail rather than the whole three-and-a-half weeks (which hardly allows time for rest and sightseeing!).
