Free Derry Corner is a historical landmark in the Bogside neighbourhood of Derry, Northern Ireland, which lies in the intersection of the Lecky Road, Rossville Street and Fahan Street. A free-standing gable wall commemorates Free Derry, a self-declared autonomous nationalist area of Derry that existed between 1969 and 1972.

I’ve been blessed to get to visit Free Derry Corner on three separate occasions — 2022, 2023, and 2024. On my visit in 2023, braille had been added at the request of a local gentleman named Richard Moore. If you know Mr. Moore’s story, it’s easy to understand what a beautiful gesture the addition of braille was.

On 5 January 1969, after a night of rioting and sustained police attacks on the Bogside, the words "You Are Now Entering Free Derry" were painted on the gable wall of 33 Lecky Road. This simple graffiti became the defining symbol of the civil rights era and an internationally recognised symbol of resistance to state injustice.

The Bogside is a neighbourhood outside the city walls of Derry, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The large gable-wall murals by the Bogside Artists, Free Derry Corner and the Gasyard Féile (an annual music and arts festival held in a former gasyard) are popular tourist attractions.

Free Derry corner was one of the things I mosr wanted to see when visiting Derry. It is an iconic monument, a symbol for The Troubles and a sight I've been used to all my life on TV and in books.
