President-elect Donald Trump was joking when he suggested Canada become the 51st U.S. state during a dinner with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, a Canadian minister who attended their recent dinner said Tuesday.

President-elect Donald Trump reportedly told Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that Canada should consider becoming the “51st state” if the country can’t handle his proposed tariffs. Trump met with Trudeau last week after the latter became alarmed at the president-elect’s proposed 25% tariff on all Canadian-imported goods.

The president-elect’s flippant comment to the Canadian prime minister might worry Canadians, but the scenario would also not be good for Republicans.
