Surprise ex-Marvel star returning to MCU in new Avengers film - Another familiar face will show up in the 2026 blockbuster

It is very well known at this point that Robert Downey Jr. will be playing a different role in the multiverse movie, and more recent reports suggest he'll be joined by some familiar faces.

So it remains unclear if Evans, who starred as Captain America Steve Rogers and made brief appearances as that character in several MCU films, will reprise that role or take on a new one in "Avengers: Doomsday," due in theaters in May 2026.

Even before San Diego Comic-Con’s surprise news that Robert Downey Jr. was back in the MCU as Doctor Doom, we’d heard rumblings that Marvel Studios was trying to bring back a few of its first Avengers for another team-up. Now, it might be one step closer.

Doomsday role may not remain a mystery anymore as a new report possibly reveals who he is playing. It isn't Captain America or even his long-theorized twisted Captain Hydra variant. It isn't Johnny Storm either.

Avengers: Doomsday will see the return of Chris Evans to the MCU, providing the chance to repeat the actor's 2024 cameo in an inherently darker way. Avengers: Doomsday's story was confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 after the restructuring of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
