Paraguay formally opened its new Jerusalem embassy in Israel on Thursday in a ceremony attended by President Santiago Peña and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, following a back-and-forth struggle over the diplomatic seat that kicked off in 2018.

Jerusalem: The small South American nation of Paraguay reopened its embassy in Jerusalem on Thursday, becoming the latest of just a small handful of countries to recognise the bitterly contested city as Israel's capital.

Paraguay formally opened its new Jerusalem embassy in Israel on Thursday in a ceremony attended by President Santiago Peña and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, following a back-and-forth struggle over the diplomatic seat that kicked off in 2018. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar was present at the ceremony.

Hamas Movement said that the decision by the President of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, to relocate his country's embassy to occupied Jerusalem represents a blatant violation of the rights of the Palestinian people to their land and eternal capital.

The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) on Friday called on Paraguay to abandon plans to relocate its embassy to Quds, urging respect for human values, justice, and international law.

Peña reopened Paraguay’s embassy to Israel in an official ceremony on Thursday, making it the fifth to be opened in the capital. He said during the ceremony: "Mr. Prime Minister, on behalf of all the Paraguayan people, we were with you, we are with you, and we will stay with the people of Israel forever."
