Did a self guided walking tour through this wonderful neighbourhood. You do need to bring your walking shoes, as there are a lot of steep hips and steps to navigate!Full review by 500dank

Are there places in Alfama that are really beautiful? Yes, they do exist, it is a neat place to see overall. However, like tons of parts of Lisbon, this area can also be very, very dirty, covered in …Full review by rosetea100

The history of Alfama is rich with landmarks like São Jorge Castle and the Lisbon Cathedral offering a glimpse into the cities past.Full review by Issac F
Hello travellers, My cousin and I are staying in Alfama in June, it’s our first time in Lisbon so I’m hoping we made the right decision on the district to stay in. We hope to be able to visit all the districts with ease from this location. Is it easy to get around? I’d love a beach visit too and is it Easy to get from the airport? Sorry loads of questions. Any recommendations, advice would be great. Thank you

Staying in Alfama district in March traveling with group of 7. Do we need to make diner reservations in advance? Suggestions for local places welcome.

You have multi size restaurants in the area. In old town you will find many places that have outdoor seating on Rue Augusta and most of the seating is covered with umbrellas. The food choices are really good and the cost is very fair and not over priced. If you get creative you can find some little food locations in the surrounding neighborhoods. Enjoy!

Sorry for late reply. The guided walking tour we took was approx 4 hours. No breaks/stops were included except at the very end of the tour. I recommend the guided tour. The knowledgeable guide showed us typical places, told us typical stories of this neighborhood, that we may not have visited when planning the tour by ourselves.
Hello, wondering what the best way to visit Alfama would be? Can one do it without a guide? Do we need to pay admissions fees for sites? If we walk around by ourselves, will we not get enough of the historical/cultural perspective that a guide would provide?

We did it by ourselves and we were fortunate to get a free tour guide from the hotel we stayed at which was invaluable, he gave us historical information, recommended restaurants, places to visit etc. Some of the places we visited didn’t cost a lot to visit and you were provided with leaflets in your language to assist. Also, Google is great tool to get more information if you need it.
