The cardinals have gathered in Vatican City to choose the 267th pope. St Peter, regarded as the first pope, was elected around 30AD. In the morning, cardinals will take part in a mass in St Peter’s Basilica. Later, in the afternoon, the cardinals will walk in a procession along the Via delle Fondamenta to the Sistine Chapel.

More than 130 cardinals are entering the largest-ever conclave today to elect the new pope. They will go into the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City to choose the late Pope Francis's successor and will have no contact with the outside world until white smoke rises into the air.

All eyes are on Vatican City Tuesday with just over a day to go until the start of the papal conclave to elect the 267th pope.
