Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a memorandum that could soon give highway patrol officers some of the power of federal immigration agents.

Gov. Ron DeSantis is in a standoff with Florida's legislative leaders that has devolved into a test of his power and influence over the state. At issue: a slate of immigration reforms that lawmakers named after President Trump and approved in place of DeSantis' own proposals.

Governor Ron DeSantis held a series of roundtable discussions on Wednesday with law enforcement officials and Floridians impacted by illegal immigration, emphasizing the urgent need for robust state legislation to address the ongoing immigration crisis.

Among other things, legislative leaders want to remove the governor’s ability to declare state of emergencies over immigration.

In a special session on Monday, leaders seemed to be declaring their independence from a governor who has wielded so much power that legislative sessions have become largely predictable rubber stamps.

DeSantis said his office was not involved in discussions about the bill that passed Tuesday, which he called “weak, weak, weak.”

Lawmakers are considering stripping DeSantis of his immigration enforcement powers, which the governor used to fly migrants to Martha’s Vineyard three years ago.
