Sweden started building a final storage facility for spent nuclear fuel on Wednesday, only the second such site in the world, where highly radioactive waste will be stored for 100,000 years. Sweden has initiated the construction of a repository for the long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel in Söderviken, close to the Forsmark nuclear power plant. The Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company (SKB) received an environmental permit to build and operate the repository in October 2024.

Sweden has broken ground on its ambitious $11 billion nuclear waste repository, where highly radioactive material will rest in an underground maze of tunnels stretching 60 kilometers - longer than the New York City subway's longest line.
