Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum and Mayor-elect Monroe Nichols held a news conference Thursday afternoon to talk about the transition period ahead of Nichols' swearing in in December.

Monroe Nichols wrote his name in the history books on Tuesday when he defeated Karen Keith to become the first Black mayor of Tulsa.

With 69 percent of the vote in, and with Monroe at over 56%, he has claimed victory in the Tulsa mayoral election. Certification of the results will make him the first Black mayor in the city’s history and over 103 years after the Tulsa Race Massacre.

History was made as State representative Monroe Nichols was elected as the 41st Mayor of Tulsa and the first Black mayor.
