Federal rules state that a special government employee (SGE) like Musk can only be in place for up to 130 consecutive days. In Musk’s case, that would appear to make his leaving date May 30, the 130th day from Trump’s inauguration.
Should Elon Musk leave DOGE soon, it would be a stark reversal from March, when Trump was looking to extend Musk’s stay.
"At a certain point, I think it will end, but they have also gotten a big education," Trump said of his secretaries. "There'll be a point at which the secretaries will be able to do this work and do it very, you know, as we say, with the scalpel, and that's what we want."
Though his time with DOGE could soon end, it remains unclear how Elon Musk's influence in the White House will change.
