WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration said Monday that it has deported 17 more “violent criminals” from the Tren de Aragua and MS-13 gangs to El Salvador, as it doubles down on a policy of removing people from the U.S. to countries other than their own despite criticism over lack of transparency and human rights issues.

A military plane ferried 17 more people accused of being gang members to a prison in El Salvador. The White House said it was acting under a different legal authority than the one a judge blocked with a temporary order.

The Trump administration admitted Monday that it mistakenly deported a Maryland father to El Salvador’s prison housing some of Latin America’s most notorious gang members, but officials said U.S. courts don’t have the authority to right the wrong.
