TULSA, OKLA (KTUL) — We are less than a month away from Mayor-Elect Monroe Nichols being sworn in as Tulsa's 41st mayor. He and G.T. Bynum held a joint news conference Thursday afternoon about the transition of power. Bynum said he wants to make sure Nichols has everything he needs to be successful.

Black residents say Nichols’ election adds a new, inspiring page to the history books of a city known for its dark past.

Monroe will also be Tulsa's first Black mayor. He gave his acceptance speech in front of images of Black Wall Street in the days before the Tulsa Race Massacre.

With 69 percent of the vote in, and with Monroe at over 56%, he has claimed victory in the Tulsa mayoral election. Certification of the results will make him the first Black mayor in the city’s history and over 103 years after the Tulsa Race Massacre.
