Gukesh and Caruana are both on two points after the result and it remains to be seen who among the rest could overtake them.

Reigning world champion D Gukesh and world number two Fabiano Caruana played out a stalemate that lasted just 24 moves, and are currently sitting at the third and fourth spots respectively with 2 points each.

World No 2 Fabiano Caruana, has called Gukesh’s match against Anish Giri in the opening round of the Tata Steel chess tournament in the Dutch town of Wijk aan Zee “absolutely insane.” “Yesterday was absolutely insane,” said Caruana.

D Gukesh, playing with black pieces, drew his second-round match in the Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2025 against Vladimir Fedoseev. The day saw several players settling for draws, including Arjun Erigaisi and defending champion Yi Wei.

In the third round of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament, D Gukesh played a cautious game resulting in a draw with Fabiano Caruana. Both players now have two points, maintaining their positions in this competitive chess event.

World chess champion D Gukesh thus moved to two points out of a possible three in the first major tournament of the year.
