El Salvador has offered to take in people deported from the U.S. for entering the country illegally and to house some of the country’s violent criminals — even if they’re American citizens.

On Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced during a visit to El Salvador that Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele has offered to incarcerate criminals deported from the U.S. in the Central American country's CECOT mega-prison.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the offer includes incarcerated American citizens who would be held in the country’s maximum-security prison.
