The PlayStation 5 Pro is the most powerful console ever made, but you’ll pay dearly for its performance. Thanks to a faster GPU, it finally delivers 4K and 60 fps performance for PlayStation gamers, with a dash of new ray tracing features.

The PlayStation 5 Pro was in development “even before” the original PS5 launched,” Sony Interactive co-CEO Hideaki Nishino told Variety in a new interview released Thursday. Nishino was previously head of products at Sony’s gaming brand back in 2020 when Sony launched the first PS5 models,

Still, many graphics-conscious console gamers were looking for an excuse to use the extra pixels and HDR colors on their new 4K TVs, and spending hundreds of dollars on a stopgap console years before the PS5 served that purpose well enough.

The PlayStation 5 Pro doesn’t bother with any of that. It’s an exercise in providing less, for more, and what it does provide will only appeal to a very select group of people. It also costs $700 — $200 or more than the existing PS5 models.
