The A's are leaving Oakland at the bidding of owner John Fisher. Las Vegas has committed public dollars to the construction of a new ballpark for the A's, but that partial funding will be secured only if Fisher is able to secure private financing for the rest of the stadium project.

The weird existence of the franchise formerly known as the Oakland Athletics has officially begun.The A's took the first step in walking away from their glorious Oakland history — which included four World Series championships — by issuing "new brand guidelines" to the media on what the team should be called now that it is saying goodbye to 57 MLB seasons in the East Bay and moving to a temporary home in Sacramento.

Surprisingly, the team will not incorporate California into its new team name after departing the Bay Area after 57 years in Oakland. The Athletics will move to Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento next season, as they call the Triple-A ballfield their home until their new digs in Las Vegas are ready for the team to move into.

Flashback: This is the third time the A’s are moving in their history. The franchise was launched as the Philadelphia Athletics in 1901 and moved to Kansas City in 1955 before heading to Oakland in 1968.

The Oakland Athletics are no more, officially. The team on Monday announced its “new brand guidelines,” and they have nothing to do with the city they played in the past 57 years. From now on, the team wants to be known as the Athletics.
