The City Council today confirmed former Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell as the 59th chief of the LAPD, the nation’s third-largest law enforcement agency, despite opposition from some immigrant rights advocates and other activists.
New LAPD chief confirmed
He has a long history in the city and county, having served with the LAPD for 29 years, then as chief of the Long Beach Police Department, and later was elected to L.A. County sheriff. He most recently served as the director of the University of Southern California's Price School’s Safe Communities Institute.
