A volcano in southwestern Iceland that has erupted repeatedly for more than a year again belched lava and smoke into the air, just hours after authorities evacuated the few remaining residents of a nearby fishing village.

A volcanic eruption in southwest Iceland led to the evacuation of Grindavík and the Blue Lagoon, with the fissure measuring 500 meters and molten rock visible.

While this eruption has not affected the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik or flights arriving and departing from the country’s airports, the Blue Lagoon, which is one of Iceland’s most popular tourist attractions, was evacuated because of the eruption and will remain closed until 3pm on Wednesday April 2 as a precaution.

The eruption began near Grindavik, a small town long threatened by volcanic disruptions, and prompted the closure of a popular tourist destination.
