Los Angeles Lakers rookie guard Bronny James will suit up in the G League for the South Bay Lakers, which was not unexpected. After sharing the court with his father LeBron on Opening Night and then later scoring his first basket in the NBA, the 20-year-old will also play in the developmental league with the Lakers’ G League affiliate.

On Friday night, LeBron James will play his first game of the season without his son by his side. The Los Angeles Lakers assigned Bronny James to the team’s G League South Bay Lakers squad on Thursday.

Sources close to the Lakers state that Bronny will only play for South Bay during their home games. James will then “shuttle” between both teams during an undisclosed period of time. While it may come as a shock to some fans, Lakers head coach JJ Redick explained that this was the plan they had for Bronny “since day one.”
