Officials in South Korea and Australia have cited concerns about user data and national security as reasons to block the buzzy AI service from China.

Australia issued a statement that requires all government entities to prevent the access, use or installation of DeepSeek products, applications and web services on Australian government systems and mobile devices.

Beijing has criticised Australia's decision to ban Chinese-owned AI chatbot DeepSeek from government devices. It comes as the federal government on Tuesday announced it was banning DeepSeek from workplace devices “to protect Australia’s national security and national interest".

As American big tech companies lashed for their slow efforts to prevent harms Australia’s Department of Home Affairs has banned the use of DeepSeek on federal government devices.… A policy issued on February 4th warns that the Chinese chat app conducts “extensive collection of data and exposure of that data to extrajudicial directions from a foreign government that conflict with Australian law.

Defence Minister Richard Marles claims the advice on a Chinese artificial intelligence program called DeepSeek is that it would represent an “unacceptable risk” to government networks to have the app.
