If you have the time, it is absolutely worth driving from Selma to Montgomery to follow the March to Montgomery path. Selma is a bit run down, so you won't need to spend a ton of time there, but ther…Full review by sydsel

The distance is about 45 miles from Edmund Pettus bridge to Montgomery on route 80. The highway is pretty much flat and you can see cotton fields along the way reminding you of the pre-cursors to th…Full review by Sundncr

My advice is don't go! Nothing to do in this town! Worst place I have ever lived! Since the 70s the town has gone from bad to worse!Full review by R6993OUjamesc
My husband and I are hoping to walk the Selma to Montgomery trail to really soak in the history of the area. Do you know of any landowners that may be open to us pitching a tent on their property? We don’t need to light a fire or anything, but would welcome a place or two to crash near the trail as we follow the footsteps of those before us. Thank you for your help.

There a a few museums along the route with lots of land. Perhaps try them Make sure to visit the legacy museum /monument in Montgomery it is stunning and heartbreaking.
Is it safe and possible to bike the historic trail from Selma to Montgomery?

I’m an experienced cycle tourist and I have just driven from Montgomery to Selma. My feeling is that it would be unpleasant but not suicidal to ride the road. There are wide shoulders but traffic moves fast. Putting it differently, if it’s a pilgrimage then go ahead and do it. Otherwise I would recommend a different ride as it won’t be fun.
I was a part of the march on March 26,1965 as a US Army MP. We were there to protect the marchers and as the very last persons of the march. Our 5 ton wrecker was equipped with a 50 cal. machine gun aimed at the crowd that followed behind . The real irony to this is that the soldier manning the weapon is a Great-Great Grandson of General Edmund Pettus.(PFC Richard Edmund Pettus of Glendale, Virginia. There are 3 pictures clearly Identifying this as fact in the Pictorial Life of M L K Jr. (1997) I offer this information as History of the past . The fight for human dignity never ended

Wow, the rear gunner was a decedent of the namesake of the bridge. I wonder how he feels about his role in history then and now.
I have to do the route backward (Montgomery to Selma) . Can you still see the historical markers and the interpretive center with the campsites if you’re going in the opposite direction? (Montgomery to Selma as opposed to Selma to Montgomery)
A:
You sure can. Most stuff will be on the right (north) side of the roadway.
